Overview

MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching)

Need to connect multiple sites together securely and efficiently?

Our high performance MPLS network could be just what you need. Through our next generation MPLS backbone, we provide advanced IP networking that allocates bandwidth between voice, data and applications to maximise performance.

MPLS is highly customisable. By applying different settings to various types of traffic, you’re able to prioritise time-sensitive applications such as VoIP. These sophisticated options also enable traffic to be sent over non-standard paths, allowing you to minimise delays in sending or receiving data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a routing technique within a telecommunications network that directs data from one node to the next. It delivers a variety of use cases including as a virtual private network (aka an MPLS VPN), traffic engineering, and Quality of Service.

For its part, the Saicom MPLS backbone delivers an advanced IP network in South Africa and beyond that allocates bandwidth between voice, data, and applications to maximise performance.

Even though both MPLS and leased lines deliver wide area networking (WAN) connectivity, the former is implemented as a full mesh while the latter establishes a connection between two points.

Leased line is therefore a symmetric telecommunication link between two sites and can be used for voice, data, and internet services.

MPLS is a packet switched data transmitting network technology that can transport limitless variations of traffic. And unlike leased line infrastructure that is not shared by other subscribers, an MPLS network can securely be shared between several subscribers each having a self-contained environment, significantly reducing costs.

MPLS directs packets through the network based on an assigned label, on a predetermined path through the network. Path labels provide more control than in more traditional packet-switched networks.

It also means various Quality of Service characteristics and priorities can be assigned to specific data flows allowing for more efficient network performance.

Traditional internet protocol routing makes decisions about IP packets based on IP headers. MPLS considers the MPLS header with the associated packets to optimally deliver routing services.

By enabling different classes of service and priority queueing, the network identifies the traffic which is most important, resulting in significant performance benefits. It is also a more effective way of future proofing the organisational telecommunications infrastructure to support more innovative services and sophisticated, bandwidth-intensive traffic.

MPLS is highly customisable to prioritise time-sensitive applications such as VoIP and video feeds. By providing options to enable traffic flows to be sent over non-standard paths, a company can minimise delays in sending or receiving data.

Furthermore, MPLS provides complete visibility into your business network and has the option for additional data security protocols to be integrated into operations.
